Mothers on Ink
Mothers. We all come from one.
Whether she was who we wanted her to be or someone completely different.
She was human. And so are we.
In Mother Tongues, six women take to the stage to explore the language and voices of
who we come from and the lasting impact of both having and being a mother.
Heart wrenching, funny, raw and real, these stories flip the myth of the Good Mother
and hope to open a dialogue to redefine what it means to be a mother.

Alli Brumwell
As a child, Alli wanted to be an archaeologist. She longed to dig up secrets and put pieces of ancient bone back together. But she hated the feeling of dry chalky hands. Then at the age of 18, on the night her life changed forever, Alli started writing. And she found
another way to make sense of the past. Born and raised in Vancouver Alli now lives on Salt Spring Island. She is an embarrassingly proud mother of three inspiring young women. She can be reached at allibrumwell@gmail.com.
Elizabeth Wooding
Elizabeth has been living in Vancouver since 1987. She loves the outdoors and art in every form. She’s come late to the art of writing and performing and is discovering that it’s in tense -- happening in the past, present and future. Oh yeah, and she has four kids, three dogs, and one husband. Fran Alexander
Like a lost dory out to sea, Fran got reeled in and still doesn't know how she got here. She hails from that exotic island in the Atlantic known as The Rock. She's one of a handful of Jewfies who migrated west. Fran is a mother and grandmother, and is happiest dancing on island beaches. You can find her in the forest, in a workshop, working with her clients as a psychotherapist and at franalexander@shaw.ca.
Jennifer (Lutes) Hill
For the past 22 years, Jennifer has been busy keeping three children alive. Her multidimensional role of chauffeur, cook, therapist, clean-up crew, and part-time medic has laid a broad foundation for her one true love: writing. Her former life, of choosing responsibilities over dreams, has provided lessons and stories of heartbreak and joy. Memories made, hearts broken, promises kept. She shares her time with her rescue dog, Frankie, as she embarks on a journey of finding her way back to herself.
Karen Hoffman
Karen has opened the doors and windows of her life and welcomed the incoming breeze which has carried in new ventures since her retirement from social work. Along with her circles of friends and her loving adult children, Karen has welcomed new buddies, new writing projects and, who would have ever guessed…performing on stage. With Karen’s love of story, she creates memory books for those who want to preserve their legacy at Moondance Stories.
Lindy Hughes Pfeil
After forays into journalism and astrology, and a failed attempt at joining the circus, Lindy taught English in South Africa. For the past 22 years, she has spent her days writing, dancing, and facilitating writing workshops that break the rules. She collects rocks, loves the moon and walks barefoot whenever she can, even though it embarrasses her family. Her greatest thrill is helping people find the magic in their stories.
