Shongololo is the indigenous name for the southern African millipede. In Latin, millipede means 'thousand feet.' Having so many feet makes for an interesting journey. It was on South Africa's east coast, in a seaside village called Umhlanga, where I learned that shongololos can regenerate body parts that are lost or accidentally broken by fat toddler fingers.
